If Dan's surprised at the sudden insult, it doesn't show. He's used to swallowing much harsher and crueler demeaning or uncalled-for attacks; he is, after all, a homeless, mentally ill, illiterate stripper with no magic in an industry that values violence and profit over compromise. People assume the worst of him and rarely open their mind enough to be proven wrong.

Emptiness and a will to die, sure. Dan can't say he lays claim to ugliness or envy.
