In Dean's defense, his Dad started training him how to directionally orient himself when he was, like, seven. Sometimes he forgets exactly how different his childhood was from other people's. Including aliens, apparently.
Dean is beginning to think that this might all be a really vivid fever dream, or something.
He sighs and looks around, trying to wrack his brain for any other way to find North.
"...What are the chances that this place has the same magnetic poles as Earth?" he asks as he unclasps his watch from his wrist. He doesn't want to take too long, those things could find them at literally any time.
