FLIGHT TO THE FORD

FLIGHT TO THE FORD

The Palace is not a safe place. It's far too open and elegant, its walls broken down, its doors thrown open. There are far too many places their enemies can crawl in through. But there is an entirely different land on the other side of the palace, with an entirely different climate.
It's a land of cool temperate forests. It has a gnarled look to it. While things glow, they're knotty and thorny and a little dreary. Every so often a petrified troll can be found, covered in moss. These aren't like the trolls some of them saw frozen in Trollmarket - they're larger, uglier, and more menacing. But they're permanently frozen and no longer a danger.
Otherwise it's just misty forest. Mountains can be seen in the distance. In some areas, a road is visible, but it's perhaps not a safe place to travel, given they have enemies after them. The forest is a genuinely good place to hide. The Shadowhunters have given up chase, frightened off by the Nazgul.
And while the occasional Nazgul screech can be heard far off in the distance, they don't try to attack again.
But this is not because they've given up. They're simply waiting. Because some of the group have been poisoned by the shards of Morgul-blades. They're simply biding their time until those people turn into wraiths under their command.
They're biding their time until they can command them to destroy the group from within.
❧ Quest magic: Players can handwave that the quest bond magic is tugging the group together, so they can regroup.
❧ Archivist Spells: There will be little eddies of magic left near the occasional little bit of human ruins. These spells run a little dark.
Death flashback spells: This spell causes a target to get stuck in a 15 second traumatic flashback of a death of a human warrior in the ancient realm of Arnor, a place that was once filled with people that were gradually culled by the dark forces of one o the Nazgul - the Witch-king. The target is completely distracted during this time. Archivists can bank up to 3 iterations of this spell. Casting the spell causes a temporary Necromancer style curse effect on the Archivist: eyes going completely black for 2 minutes, and plants withering and dying around the caster. The effects are not permanent.
❧ Network: Feel free to use the network in parallel with the log events. The log can be where characters regroup, get first aid, etc. A network post can go up to allow everyone to coordinate their efforts. The mods will leave that up to one of the players.
❧ Resources: As far as food goes, there are not many edible plants in the area, just the occasional edible root. Deer and rabbits can be found but they're rare. The occasional beehive can also be found but one has to somehow get rid of the bees or mop up honey that's dripped below it. There are not many supplies to be found here. However, there are a few plants and substances that can be used for first aid, if some among their number know about them:
Athelas: A sweet smelling green plant with small blue flowers. It can be used to cure the Black Breath by boiling it in water and allowing the victim to breathe in the vapors. It can also slow the transformation caused by Morgul-blades if the wound is washed by water that has had athelas boiled in it. This can also help relieve some of the pain and cold. It smells extremely fresh and sweet, often reminding people smelling of it specific scents that remind them of home. This means it can smell different ways to different people, such making one person smell apple orchards from back home, and another fresh cut grass after a rain. Use of this herb is more potent in the hands of a king. Thanks to the magic affecting the land, it will do so for any king.
Honey: This can offer some help for disinfecting puncture wounds, but works especially well for burns, like ones caused by the grazes of the Shadowhunters' angel blades.
Foxglove: A mashed poultice of this can be put on wounds to help with healing and prevent infection.
Pine sap: Can be used as a wound disinfectant.
Willow Bark: A tea made from willow bark can be used for pain but is not recommended if someone is still bleeding heavily, as it is also a blood thinner.
Poppies: There are a few small patches of poppies. Poppies can be used as an opioid pain reliever, by eating the seeds or making a tea out of them.

Are the Nazgul following? Can they be seen from the air?

When they archive some of the magic they find in these locations, do they figure out about the harmful effects the magic may have? Or is it the sort of thing they'd find out only when they use the magic?

Dan Sagittarius | OTA
"Don't like the sound of that," Dan says quietly, listening to a Nazgul's distant screech bouncing around between the trees. He was lucky enough not to get too close to them back in the ruined city, and he's been able to tell from the ashen faces and barely-suppressed flinches of his compatriots what a blessing that was. The trees feel like a porous, insufficient barrier, jailer's bars against the evil sound cutting through the mist, and the echoes make it hard to tell how far out the Nazgul are beyond "at least a thousand yards."
Not far enough out for comfort.
For his part, Dan's looked better. He's pale, and his hands shake when he's not in the middle of doing something with them. He's in enough pain that he feels feverish, which he suspects is the prelude to an actual, infection-based fever if he doesn't get some wound care to the massive slash across his thigh. He's managed to get off his horse, who's tied up about forty yards yonder, and stagger over to a soft patch of pine needles and moss, where he can chip in on the network to offer advice for herbal remedies and survival skills, but he couldn't crawl much further than that.
"Alright, what are we going to do with you?" He says after getting off the network, looking at the cauterized wound across his quad and inner thigh. He takes a moment to close his eyes, dizzy, and then gets to digging through the supplies on his person for a waterskin to slake his thirst.
II. Post-Care Blues (Open to All)
Sleep doesn't come easy, what with the combination of pain and the Nazgul screams in the distance. Rest may be nature's curative, but it's also elusive when one's hair is standing on end from unease every three minutes.
Normally, Dan would be pacing to work off nervous energy, but he can't do that with his leg all mauled, and he wants to keep his wits about him in case they're abruptly attacked, so he isn't drinking much. He's been trying not to bite his hands. He doesn't have cigarettes, so he's chewing some of the tobacco leaves he got from the marketplace, but that's turning his stomach.
There's so much that needs doing, and he's so unable to do most of those things. He starts to whittle at a piece of driftwood that got belched up from the river nearby.
I. A Hard Leg of the Journey
"Dan?" she calls out as she gets near. She saw his horse tied up a little ways back, which she gave a wide berth so as not to scare her, but has yet to see him yet.
When she does stumble upon him, she immediately gasps and crouches down next to him.
"Shit. What happened?"

Cammie hasn't seen Dan since they separated earlier in the day, and christ, things sure went to hell since then. He's right near the top of her list of people to check made it out okay, someone she's actively seeking out when she finds him.
Her ears are back on, but that's not the only change to her look since the desert. There's extra material wrapped around her waist that she wasn't wearing before, a couple of layers of it by the looks of it. She's tried to make it look like she just felt like accessorising, rather than the mix of bandaging and disguising the wound that it is, but her success may be limited by the way she's clearly favouring one side.
"Dan! There you are. Christ, what happened to you? Or, should I say which kind of bastards happened to you?"

In contrast, the air of serenity that Kaworu gives off feels out of place. It's either soothing or deeply grating – your mileage may vary. But here he is, wandering over with his hands in his pockets, appearing apparently unharmed and unperturbed by recent events. He pauses a few feet away with a thoughtful expression and a faint smile.
"Does it help to feel productive?" he asks, admittedly quite abruptly. "Even in such a small way?"

"Guess who just finished digging the pits?"
That's a complete lie. The shitpits were dug hours ago. Dan probably was in no condition to dig anything effectively, so Filbo just hurried to get that done time ago. Still, pretending he was out doing that and just finished feels like a decent excuse for, well, coming here. Pretty transparent excuse.
"So, since now I find myself with free time, here I am!"
Filbo sits down. It's no more than an attempt to keep Dan distracted, truthfully, even keeping up the cheerful air for his benefit.
"Do you mind if I ask you a question or two about yourself?"

Still...she heard from the network mirror that Dan had gotten injured. As much as Ange would love to wallow in her bitterness and despair for a while longer, at some point she has to stop and return to the camp, and that's when she sees Dan.
"You look terrible"
Pretty straightforward greeting, that one.

It smells in a way that is easy to sniff out for a sensitive nose, and Bunny is busy long into the gang's flight gathering it and the foxglove, in triangulating the distance the nazgul are keeping and how many there are - Dean said there are nine in total, and he doesn't think this is the full complement, but he could be mistaken. It keeps him away while Dan is still recovering. He's gone as long as he can be active and useful, until the need to sleep drives him back to the edge of camp, to find Dan and ease his mind that Dan's wound is as cared for as it can be at present, to find Dan and put the day's work to bed, now that he has to put himself to bed as well.
Dan's whittling when he lopes out of the trees and to the river's edge so that Dan can see him long before he approaches from the side with Dan's good ear. "Hey." He's relieved, and tired, and glad to see Dan. It all comes through in his tone. "How's your leg?"
He presses his nose to Dan's forehead, paw to the back of Dan's head in greeting.

Alloran | OTA
The group's paused to rest, but Alloran can't bring himself to stop, not in a non-secured location with the shrill cries of the enemy still sounding, not when he's still in better condition and more able to keep a watch than most people. No injuries show on him, no blood mats his fur, if he's rattled, well, that's nothing. In his past with the Fleet he's gone longer with more exertion and less rest, but that was when he was young and in fighting trim. It doesn't matter. Someone has to be herd sentinel, for all that this can never be herd to him.
Alloran walks a perimeter, stumbling only a few times. He's got his stalk eyes scanning every which way and probably sees anyone watching him, but barely indicates noticing, turning a hand palm up or tapping a forehoof on the ground. You know, the kind of thing that might not even read as acknowledgement to a non-Andalite. Whenever one of the Nazgul screams in the distance he stops, ears cupped, all eyes staring out into the mist and trees, a tremor just visible in his bladed tail as he raises it.
Cammie MacCloud
Cursed Weapon Problems
It kicks in a little while after they stop to regroup. She gets through talking to Dan, having him help her treat the wound that she goes right back to hiding as soon as she's not with him anymore, and testing out their magic stuff, but after...
Something feels wrong. That's the first thing. Something just feels wrong, like something bad is going to happen any second if she doesn't stay on high alert. It's all too easy to dismiss, considering they can hear the Nazguls, considering an attack is a real possibility.
What's not easy to dismiss is the stuff she starts to see. It starts as dark shadows in the corner of her eye, in a shape that's all too familiar, that set her heart racing and makes her head jerk to look, just in case. But he's not here, it's not real, she knows it can't be real—something like Nemesis, if it were real, people would be reacting, but that's not actually all that reassuring. This doesn't happen to her. This has never been how her stupid damn trauma works.
She can feel herself panicking, and she's equal parts frustrated at herself that something that happened over six months ago now in another world can have any effect on her and scared of someone seeing her like— like this. She needs to calm down, or at least step away from the group until whatever this is stops, but then she turns her head towards a shadow again and this time, this time, the hallucination doesn't stop.
As clouds of purple smoke roll out of the trees, the dark, towering figure from her nightmares looms over her, all four arms reaching out to grab her, and—
It's not real. She knows it's not real. But that doesn't stop her from damn near jumping out of her skin so hard she almost falls over and letting out a startled yelp before she throws her hands up to cover her mouth and hopes to god no one saw or heard that.

for Miranda
Kon-El
locked to Dick, Tim, Stacia, and Elle?
[Fortunately, in his current state, he'd been a handful for both the Shadowhunters and the Nazgul. The blood claws dealt deeply infectious wounds to normal human skin, and seemed to have some way of cutting into the ethereal. The Nazgul had not liked it and they'd steered clear of him after his second encounter. Something that may be useful in the future.]
[But when the quest magic finally teleports him to the rest of the group, the state he's in is still extremely bad and shockingly different than earlier in the day. He has a few burns from glancing angel blade blows and some cuts and scrapes, but the injuries he sustained aren't the problem.]
[It's the blood from other people's injuries, splattered over his clothes and skin. It's not enough to suggest any arterial spray at least, but he's still spattered with blood from many people caused by many slashing blows.]
[He's one of the people that'd changed into makeshift robes made of a light wool and between the fact they're shredded in quite a few places, the minor injuries left untended to, and the blood spatters, he looks like someone that was going around in a senseless whirlwind fighting people, like a zombie.]
[Even more unnatural: the inky black eyes, the blood dripping from his mouth from the few people he bit, and the long unnatural claws formed over his hands, made of a mix of his own black blood and the blood of some of the people he hurt.]
[So far nothing about this experience has helped him calm down. He'd been teleported over and over to new sets of enemies that'd attacked him on site, the rage that'd kickstarted this had been because of the Shadowhunters preventing him from helping Tim and Tim had been nowhere to be found (and he didn't even remember that he'd left him on purpose), and his own rising panic (his inner voice screaming "not again please not again" every time he started to regain control, it'd all made him slip under again every time he almost broke free.]
[So when he teleports in, into another disorienting change of scenery, it is pretty much akin to a feral ragemonster zombie getting dropped into the middle of camp.]
[There is an unearthly screech, ragged breathing, and then his head darts around as he looks for a new target.]

Bob Laughs-at-the-Storm
It doesn't take long for Laughs to realise that not just seem their pursuers have either lost their trail or decided to keep their distance, the quest bond is also strong enough to allow him to leave the bulk of the group and move away from them by a fair margin without losing knowledge of where they are.
Which means that he dares to slip away far enough to turn into wolf form and go hunting.
So it might happen that those who venture into the forest to find herbs or other remedies, or perhaps go hunting themselves, come across a wolf feasting on a dead deer. He stops when he notices someone approaching but doesn't move away from his kill - he only just started eating, he's not going to just abandon this first proper food that he's found since getting here.
II. OPEN
Once he's eaten, he'll poke around a bit, first in lupus and then in homid, to see if he can find anything useful for those in the group that seem to be sick. The problem is that he doesn't really know what he's looking for, and so others who appear to be looking for remedies in the forest will find themselves approached by a young man wearing soft shorty shorts, a cut-out t-shirt with a Japanese print on it, a hoodie and snow boots. He looks them over for a moment and then asks:
"Do you know what you are looking for?"
III. Closed to Stacia & Ace
But there is something else that he needs to do, and eventually he finds a secluded place not too far away from the main group, shifts to his breed form, and howls a greeting. Those who understand wolf will hear: My name is Bob Laughs-at-the-Storm of the Red Talons. Are there any other Garou here? Or other werewolves? And then he just. Sits his butt down and waits. Perhaps someone will come. He doesn't have high expectations, but it's worth a try.

Ange Ushiromiya
Not Open
Raistlin's immediate attention, when she was freshly stabbed, helped a lot. He wasn't able to get the Morgul blade shard out, but it helped. It didn't make things any easier to deal with, though. It's hard to go on with your day when you know you have something inside you that, when you least expect it, will turn you against everyone else. Ange would laugh bitterly and loudly if she could, fed up with everything. Great! Awesome! Fantastic!
Also she's cold. She can't tell if maybe that's a secondary effect from the shard or if it's just that this is cold climate.
Ange seeks somewhere away from everyone else and just begins shouting. Usually she'd shout inside her head whenever she needed to let out some steam privately, but right now she's too angry for that
"Isn't it enough to bring me here?! Who made this all?! What's the point of all this -- is all this some sort of metaphor for me?! You think I'm going to swallow it just because you wrap it with fantasy and adventure, like trying to hide seaweed in food?! I don't care!"
Ange takes a deep breath, shouting at the skies.
"Fine! I will just nod and watch things happen! I will clap until my hands are raw if that's what you want! Amazing metaphores, such meaningful messages! I'm choking on the poignancy, damn it! Say something, or laugh, or sneer at me, do whatever you want! Say something!"
None of this is real, she thinks, of course it isn't real. This is some sort of elaborate deception once again! She was promised the truth, finally the truth, and first she got a saccharine rendition of her dead family, and then instead of Rokkenjima and her family there was this ridiculous fantasy adventure that's completely unrelated. Ange is fed up with it. She doesn't care if everything happening represents some point the one in charge is trying to make, or if each person here represents some part of her heart in some convoluted and very deep manner, or if these are just random things stitched together to make a weird fantasy. All she wants is some answers, she wants what she was supposed to get, now!
........
Nothing happens. No reply, no sneering, no laughter. Not a word. Just the cold.
Ange trembles, both from anger and because it's freezing. She thought that, if this all was a witch's tale to torment her, they'd take the bait and take the chance to laugh further, just laugh at Ange once again trying to grasp what she wants, placing it out of her reach again and again and again and again. But there isn't even that much here.
Defeated and teary-eyed, Ange walks back to the camp.

Filbo Fiddlepie
Open to Everyone
I
"Bees over there, careful over there"
There goes Filbo, passing through camp to go to the opposite direction. He's exploring the area, trying to find the little things that are going to be of help. Thankfully he got out of there and didn't get stung, he's catching a break. Let's go in the other direction.
Filbo walks until he realizes what sort of trees are here. These are pines! Okay, what was it Lizbert used to say? She said so many little things and details they all mix together. Wait, she had said something about having been in some ruins in some mountain in some remote part of the world. No medical attention, civilization like five miles away...pine sap was supposed to be a disinfectant, right? Yes, that was it!
It doesn't take long for Filbo to return to the camp and take a bowl or two.
"Hey, I found a pine!" ...there are literally hundreds of pines in this area, Filbo. "I'm pretty sure you can use pine sap to disinfect wounds. We should get some!"
He takes three steps before he turns his head.
"I'm not misremembering it's supposed to be like that, right?"
II
It's nighttime! And there's once another Nazgul call. It's a little past midnight and Filbo has barely slept. Every time he hears a cry, he keeps thinking that maybe, if they all lower their guard, those things will swoop in and just...eliminate everybody. There are no safer places here, unless you go around climbing trees to run away from them.
You know what, perhaps the one thing to do is to keep an eye out. Again.
Filbo sits to a rock, looking around at the trees. "Here we go again..." If it means safety another night without sleep is fine. It's necessary. Filbo may not be the leader here, or the deputy, or anything even close to that, but hey, someone has to do this. May as well be him, no?
III
There are ruins around here! Wow, he knows some people who would have loved to check these out! Especially since they're another civilization's ruins! Filbo isn't all that into archaeology, or into adventuring, though. He just goes around, trying to find something of use.
Instead, he found a dark spell.
Back at the camp there's Filbo, approaching you.
"Hey, do you know anything about spells? I found a usable on in some ruins nearby, but it...well..." he gestures vaguely. "It seems like bad news. Side effects! I dunno what they are, but it feels like a bad idea"
Truthfully, even though it seems like it has consequences attached, he's considering taking it along, if only because, well, you have to be versatile. If he can store magic for later use, then he should try to do that to the fullest, no? But at least Filbo has enough common sense to know you can't just stick your paws into dark magic just like that. Better consult with someone who knows more.

Sister Sara Sawbones
Miles Morales l Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
1:
[Miles will be tense, still expecting.....something. But he will be going around trying to figure helping out where he can, introducing himself as Miles so people get to know him too. Helping by simply fetching stuff for someone or just sitting with them if they are hurt, offering to play cards, find a book, whatever, to at least try keep them occupied somehow.
He's vaguely aware that some herbs or the like are supposed to help with injuries, so maybe he asks one of the others which ones to keep an eye out for. He knows he will be out doing patrols anyway, as Spider-Man. May as well try keep an eye out for that sort of thing on walks or patrols.]
2:
[At night, Miles is back in the suit. He can't help being nervous and on edge about this. He prowls around near the rooftops, constantly keeping an eye out. As if he could really single handedly stop these creatures. As if he could really do anything against them after last time when he just instinctively fled. But he has that desire to try help, to do something. As any Spider-Man would. Because it doesn't matter if he misses out on sleep. As long as everyone is safe. It isn't like sleep would be easy. With the Nazgul and all anyway. So Miles figures he may as well try keep an eye out as best he can.]
2.
She recognizes the kid in costume from the mirrors. He did introduce himself as Spider-Man after all. She spends a minute observing him as he looks around before emerging from the shadows and into his sightline.]

Stacia
Locked to Elle & Stacia
[Stacia is relieved when Elle shuffles out of the clearing after her. She'd been prepared to sit on her curiosity, but it's nice to not have to do so. She does, however, wait until they're out of immediate earshot of whatever trauma bonding is going on between Kon and Tim and Dick before opening her mouth.]
So. What the hell was that all about? The details you have, obviously, some of that is clearly deep lore.

Remy LeBeau/Gambit | OTA
Remy'd rolls in to the Palace eventually. The noticeable injury is a split lip, but the way he moves signals that there's probably some bruising under the body armor.
He brushes off an ashed spot on his coat, finally finding a place to sit down with a groan, head back against the wall behind him.
Looking up when he hears somebody nearby, he opens his eyes and raises an eyebrow before reaching into his coat to pull out...a piece of candy. "Jolly Rancher? 'Bout all I got to offer at de moment."
II
Nighttime has never been an issue for Remy. He had learned early how to function on less sleep than he really needed. It means he's going to crash hard once they reach safety, but for the moment, a few catnaps are enough to keep him going.
So keeping the fire going overnight isn't a problem. Especially while boiling the athleas, which far too many people needed.
He finally sits back, looking over his shoulder as the Nazgul screeched in the distance. After another moment, he reaches for the deck of cards in a chest pocket in his coat, quietly shuffling them from one hand to the other.

But just one, because he feels likes he’s a couple hours short to do a death march through bear-infested woods with an entire host of monsters chasing them. Now starring Nazgul.
The fire’s going, and Tommy kinda questions that. He’s pretty sure that’s how the killers find you, stupid shit like lighting fires, but there’s people who lost a lot of blood. They’re probably freezing.
So maybe Tommy veers out of his way for any decent-looking branches and unceremoniously dumps an armload next to the guy tending the fire. He was going to dump and dash, because ‘bed’ is calling, but the firelight’s enough to make him realize that he actually knows who the guy he’s been thinking of Overcoat Flasher is.
There’s an instant suspicion because most of the times any adult superhero comes near him, something stupid happens. He should’ve stayed asleep. “For the fire. Night.”
There, customary social interaction done, and he can now fuck off to bed.

Closed to Price
Her first step is to go around giving people food and water if they need it, as well as generally checking in. She does that for a little bit, making sure it's visible to wherever Price is, before approaching him.
She makes sure to approach him from a direction he can see her with a well-meaning expression on her face.
"Aiden, right? You need anything to eat or drink? I'm pretty sure we're gonna head out soon, so you'll wanna top up now."
Re: Closed to Price
"Oh, hello." he greets her feebly "I don't need anything, but thanks."

Tim Drake
Conversations will have to be fit in around whatever breaks and chores Dick and Kon are doing, as they’re likely to be keeping a close eye on time (because that’s the deal he made with Kon in exchange for being a good patient).
Without having anything to focus on and fight through, Tim’s condition is going to go downhill slowly - and be worse when he thinks no one’s looking and he can just stop trying to mask the symptoms.
When the group moves, he will try to go as far as he can with assistance, but will likely need to be carried in the end. ]
a few days in.
[He's so pale.]
[It's time for a shift change. Dick needs sleep and probably some time to do the camp equivalent of scream into a pillow.]
[Kon settles in next to him.]
You're looking a little cold, buddy.
[Kon takes off his cloak and starts wrapping it around him.]

Garviel Loken, OTA
2: ill met by moonlight Loken is huddled in a clearing, obviously cold but doing his best to endure both his wounds and the weather, his armor giving him no real respite from the inclement weather. His helmet hangs low, almost to his chest, as though he's asleep, or at least resting as much as anyone else aside from maybe Kerrigan has ever seen him.

The actual result of his breathing on leaves doesn't settle the question but it definitely seems to help with the magic at least somewhat.
I. Everybody pumped for another beautiful day slogging through the gloomy woods?
Ace tries to help with getting everyone through. He hasn't reached the end of his usually bottomless stamina but he does look a bit worse for wear. He managed to avoid any physical wounds and he is putting a brave face on it as best he can, but like everyone else he really could use some solid walls a warm fire and good company.
II. What's New Pussycat... (For Elle)
Ace has run in to Elle quite a lot in passing but they haven't spoken at length since that first day. He can kind of sense this isn't by accident but that isn't unusual. He's sure she has her reasons. They are both doing a lot of running around trying to help and they have different sets of skills so a polite wave is probably all there was time for anyway. He laid things out that first day as openly and honestly as possible and she hadn't told him she didn't want to work together. He hadn't minded giving her space.
Now, though? This whole mobile refugee camp thing is getting very old. He could probably survive in the wilds here by himself but this group needed a place they could feel safe for more than a few hours or a night. Sure he didn't know most of these people going in but he still feels responsible for helping them survive. The whole thing is wearing on him and the Nazgul's fear has him feeling shaken and... lonely.
Elle is one of two total people in this entire world from the same place as him. Time to make himself a nuisance. He looks for an opportunity to catch her attention, gives a casual wave and jogs over.

Point being, when he finds Ace by himself around the woods, no other person in sight, he doesn't bother to change out of lupus as he pulls up to the other man and just experiments - greets him in wolf, because if he's Garou he won't be able to answer in kind, being in homid, but he will understand. And if he isn't, well, he won't and that will answer that, too.
"Hello. I'm Bob-Laughs-at-the-Storm, Adren of the Red Talons." Others might add more ornamental chatter, but when you normally howl introductions, you learn to be brief.
